CTERA Networks, leader in global file services, starts to address specific workload with a n ew edge filer dedicated to Media and Entertainment. The idea is to deliver a file server at the edge with a good mix of local performance, cloud scalability and global collaboration.
The filer is a 6U system with 128TB usable (211TB raw) built with 24 SSDs of 960GB and 46 NLSAS HDD of 4TB coupled with 6 cores/12 threads cpus and 60GB of RAM. The network is 2 ports of 10GbE able to serve data via NFS and SMB at 15Gbps. Data are protected via a distributed RAID method. Connected to the CTERA Portal and S3-based object storage such Cloudian, IBM COS, Caringo or MinIO or AWS, GCP or Azure, it leverages CTera's global file system and provides a file-level versioning. It also offers local tiering from SSD to HDD then with the cloud, whatever it is private or public. Integration with Windows is particularly well done with integration with AD and Windows ACL. In his domain Mac and Adobe are a must so the solution is also well coupled with such software and operating environments.
Other features are encryption and deduplication and data moved to central data repository are replaced by a 4kB stubs. These stubs allow a direct stream from the cloud when they're read instead of a copy first then read. Other services are the support of McAfee anti-virus, DLP, backup and DR via a data copy to a secondary Edge box in addition to the redundancy in the central S3 data storage. The filer is perfectly designed to edit 8K video and is very well received by media professionals.
