DataCore offers deep block tiering

DataCore, a leader in SDS with its famous block storage virtualization, joined the recent IT Press Tour organized in Madrid, Spain. The team took advantage of its 5th participation to update the group with company news and also share directions regarding SANsymphony.

The coming V10 PSP17 will deliver several key features, both as enhancements, improvements and new functions. Among them, the improved VMware integration with vCenter, a comprehensive compressed snapshot and rollback mechanism and a block tiering technique.  This last function is named Adaptive Data Placement or ADP and offers a way to place the right data block at the right place within a storage pool after the collection of access information.

ADP helps to configure a real hierarchy of media with different characteristics inside a single pool to reduce TCO and maintain QoS for primary storage needs. The block engine collects continuously access patterns informations and adapts itself to the IO behavior. Between 2 blocks accessed recently, there is no difference except on access behavior before that last access so the frequency is key here.

In addition, this mechanism couples the right data placement with inline compression and deduplication to augment the effect. This is a key core feature, pretty unique on the market, that continues to drive the position SANsymphony occupies as a leader of disk management.
